Standing with Ukraine: America’s Moral Imperative and Strategic Necessity

March 31, 2025

As Americans, and particularly as Jews, we must recognize that Ukraine serves as a “canary in the coal mine,” signaling broader threats to democracy and international stability. Historically, Jews understand profoundly the consequences of unchecked aggression and authoritarianism, having repeatedly endured persecution and violence. Allowing Ukraine to succumb to Russian aggression sets a dangerous precedent that could directly affect other vulnerable democracies, including Israel.

Israel’s security and sovereignty rely significantly on consistent American support and international law. If the U.S. appears to waver or abandon its commitments to Ukraine, adversaries in the Middle East might similarly perceive vulnerabilities, risking escalations against Israel. Maintaining robust support for Ukraine sends a powerful deterrent message to actors like Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas, reinforcing America’s unwavering stance on sovereignty, security, and democracy.

If we fail Ukraine today, we risk signaling globally that aggression is acceptable and profitable, which would dramatically increase threats not only to Israel’s security but also to democratic nations worldwide. It is fundamentally in Israel’s and America’s shared interests that Ukraine not stand alone.

I am deeply proud that you represent my values and interests by standing firmly in support of Ukraine. Your principled stance sends a powerful message of commitment to freedom, democracy, and justice worldwide.

This Evening at Beth El
Following 5:30 p.m. services, we invite you to join us as we cut down the yellow ribbons tied to the trees in front of Beth El — symbols of our prayers and hopes for the return of the hostages.
